5 back to school freezer friendly brekfast recipes

Back to school is about two weeks away for this girl. Which means I'll be back at work, the kids will be back at school and life will be busy again. Gone will be the long summer days at the pool and evenings of whatever we would like to do.  There is a part of me that will love being back at work with my "school babies" and back into a busy routine.  Then there is a part of me who is sad to see the summer days with my children end.  My youngest had a really difficult school year last year and it makes me specially sad for him.  One thing I try to do to ensure that I have even more time with him is to stock my freezer.  I am a huge fan of once a month cooking.  If you've not heard of once a month cooking its pretty simple you take one or two days out of the month and prepare a bunch of meals ahead of time and freeze them. Stocking your freezer and making life so much simpler.  We're all about the simple life in these parts.  Today I'm going to share 5 Back to school freezer friendly breakfast recipes you can  make up now to make August run more smoothly.

Freezer Friendly Breakfast for back to school:

 photo freezerbreakfast.jpg
  • Smoothies-  smoothies are great for breakfast on the run or a go to snack on a busy afternoon.  I like to have freezer bags filled with everything I need to mix up a smoothie.   Then you just grab them out , pour them into your blender , mix and your ready. How many of you want to do this in the mornings but just don't have time. If you have it prepared ahead of time it is so easy to have a healthy breakfast on the run.   Our Banana Smoothie recipe is super simple with just three ingredients.  The key to having smoothie packs in the freezer is having everything chopped, washed and prepared in a labeled zip lock bag except for the milk and ice cubes. Add them in to your blender as you are mixing it up. (Almond Milk works great in smoothies.)  We're looking forward to trying some of these green smoothie recipes this school year from All Things Katie Marie.
  • French Toast Sticks-  Freezer French Toast Sticks are one of my family favorites. For Freezer French Toast Sticks you need one or more loaves of bread.  One loaf works well for my family but if you have a large family snag some bread when its BOGO at Publix and make even more.  The recipe is simple enough to double. To cook up a batch of French Toast Sticks takes 20 minutes.
  • Breakfast Burritos-  so breakfast burritos and breakfast bowls are easy to prepare at the same time.  I like my burritos with ground sausage. The great thing about making up breakfast ahead of time is you can easily make them customized for each family member.  Making busy mornings a lot easier. We like the Breakfast Burrito Bonanza Tutorial at Mom On Time Out.  She definitely has burrito making down to an easy science.
  • Breakfast Bowls -  Krystal's is just across the street from my work. And I am way guilty of going through in the mornings and getting an original scrambler with a coke.  It's just so easy and good too! However, spending $6 on breakfast every morning is really not budget savvy. This Mom likes to vacation to much to spend all of her money on drive thru breakfast. I like the country breakfast bowls recipe from Budget Bytes.
  • Breakfast Muffins -  these breakfast muffins are yummy and you can make a bunch at once.  I usually use sausage in mine but you could do chopped ham or bacon or even a meat lovers version if you choose.  Bake them up, freeze them and microwave in the mornings in just a few seconds you have a good hot meal.
Now you just need a good cup of coffee!  Mornings are not our cup of tea at the Whiteheads but having meals ahead of time and planning our days ahead make things run a lot smoother leaving for a happier day.  What do you do to make back to school easier? What are your favorite freezer meals? We want to know .

A taste of wine at San Sebastian Winery St. Augustine Florida

There is always something new to do in the Oldest City.  How about exploring a winery?  Head on over to San Sebastian Winery to learn a little bit more about how wine is made, and for some free wine tasting . You'll find San Sebastian Winery at 57 King Street St. Augustine, Florida.  San Sebastian Winery features muscadine grape wines.

You begin the tour with a 12 minute video where you learn about the history of wines and the muscadine grape.  Some people chose to by pass the video and skip ahead to the wine tasting.

The wine tasting is complimentary and available seven days a week.  Monday-Saturday 10am -5pm and Sunday 11am to 5pm.   It does not take very long to sample the wines and do the tour depending on how many people are in your group (about 40 minutes).  We had seven stops on our tour where we sampled a different wine and were told a little bit about each.

When you are finished with the wine tasting you will exit through a cute little gift shop.  I actually saw several cute things that would make fun gifts for friends. Wine glasses, wine toppers and of course the yummy wine.

Complete the trip by stopping by the Upstairs Cellar a wine , jazz and blues bar.  They offer an array of beers and wines for drinks.  Live music entertains on the weekends.   If its not to hot sit outside and enjoy the view. They also have a variety of light appetizers and sandwiches. The wedge salad and turkey cheddar sandwich are both pretty tasty.

If you are looking for an afternoon activity for about an hour or so then this is a good stop.  Don't expect anything hands on or interactive other than the yummy sampling. You don't actually see the ins and outs of a winery other than the video.  I did enjoy tasting and learning about the different wines.  Personally I didn't care for the port but I really liked the Rosa.   You can purchase bottles of your favorites in the gift shop.

Key West's hidden treasure: Fort Zachary Taylor State Park

Planning a trip to Key West you don’t want to miss Fort Zachary Taylor State Park.  If you are not on the look out for Fort Zachary Taylor it is definitely easy to miss.  You don’t really pass it when doing any of the main attractions in the Keys. When you do turn at the small sign to go in you feel like you are in the wrong area. We did! You were literally just in down town Key West seconds ago. Then you make the turn into Fort Taylor. Fort Taylor sits right next to the naval base which is pretty cool if you look out from the top you may just see a boat or two.

We are going to tell you some of the many reasons Fort Zachary Taylor is really a Key West treasure. If you haven't heard about it you should definitely plan a beach day and go.

A Key West Hidden Treasure! Fort Zachary Taylor State Park

Reason's to visit Fort Taylor when in Key West:

  • the history - Fort Zachary Taylor is a beautiful Civil War relic.  The architecture and designs are quite stunning. You’ll find yourself marveling at the size of the cannons and the canoon balls.  Fort Zachary Taylor has a huge Civil War armament. You can do a guided tour daily at noon, or self guide yourself around and explore the fort on your own. Fort Taylor took over 20 years to build !  Seriously 20 years that’s just crazy.  More history! The fort also played a part in World War I and II, the Cuban Missile Crises in 1962 and the Spanish American War.
  • The beach - not only do you get to visit a great little piece of history here . It’s on the beach.  There is a wonderful picnic area, concession stand and the beach of course.  Families can snorkel , swim,  and just relax.  Fort Zachary Taylor is called Key West’s best beach located where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Gulf of Mexico the water is quite beautiful.  The area is pretty rocky like many of the beaches around the Keys so watch your step or be prepared and wear some water shoes.  There are quite a few species of fish and wild life in the water around Fort Taylor making a great spot to snorkel.
  • the sunset like many of the great stops in the Keys Fort Taylor has some amazing sunsets.  Grab a camera and get ready to snap a few amazing shots.
  • Special Events - If you are lucky you might visit on a day when they are having a war re-enactment.  An event I would really like to be a part of is the Fort Taylor Pirate Invasion.  The first week of December (December 5-7) pirates take the Fort from the Redcoats.  Even though in real life this doesn’t happen this historical fiction is a lot of fun for both locals and tourists. The event is free after park admission .

Definitely a Must do when in the Keys! Our family LOVED Fort Taylor!!!

Fort Zachary Taylor is a great place to explore Florida and relax.  This a very budget friendly excursion too.   We’d have really loved ti visit Fort Jefferson and the Dry Tortugas on our visit.  However, it was not in the budget.  Fort Zachary Taylor was a great alternative Fort and day at the beach for our family. Definitely a Florida treasure we are not going to forget seeing.

Parking is included in the $6 admission so feel free to drive.  The $6 fee is per vehicle of 2 to 8 people.  Many people bike the park as well.  Admission for bikers and pedestrians is $2 per person.  The park closes daily at 5pm. Planning your visit to Fort Zachary Taylor:  601 Howard England Way Key West Florida 33040 and phone # (305)292-6713.

Everything Women Need to be Lucy! Lucille Ball Costumes {Review}

I am super excited to be going on a cruise this Fall. Even better it is a Halloween cruise. From what I hear there will be some amazing costumes on board the ship.  I can not  wait to do some serious people watching. I love checking out the costumes on Halloween. Don't you?   With this all in mind I have been on the search for the perfect costume for myself.  I was super excited when I got to choose a costume from Costume Discounters to review. The Lucille Ball Costume drew my attention at once.  Who doesn't Love Lucy?  Plus it has been said in the past that I act just like her.

Lucille Ball Costume photo photo 1_1.jpg

You will find Costume Discounters online.  Being able to shop online makes the shopping process  super easy.  I was really thrilled because they had a good variety of women's sized costumes and at great prices too.  The Lucille Ball costume came in a plus size one size fits 16-22w.  This size option sounded like it would work well for me.  I was relieved in the past I have found it difficult to find that size. When my costume arrived  I was glad to see  that it fit and also that the dress has a little bit of stretch to it.

The  I LOVE LUCY costume came with everything.

  • white hair bow
  • red haired wig
  • dress
  • apron
  • hair net
I just needed some red lipstick and shoes.  Talk about easy. I loved that I did all of my costume shopping in one shot and I did not have to make multiple purchases.

Costume Discounters Review photo photo 2_3.jpg

The dress is thinly made which I am really glad about. Even thought it will be late October it is going to be hot in the Bahamas.  I think that I could even use the apron in my kitchen after Halloween. It is really cute and I just love cute aprons.  The red wig is Awesome.  The dress comes just above the knee which I liked . It has a Velcro closure at the top of the neck.  The apron simply ties around your waste.  I probably need to pick up some bobby pins before the cruise to secure the wig a little bit better.  Another great thing about this costume is it does not take up a lot of room. I can easily fold this up and add it to my luggage.

I am really happy with the I Love Lucy costume. I think it was the perfect choice to fit my needs for this trip.  Costume Discounters made the process of finding the perfect cruise costume so simple.  I can not wait to wear it and see what everyone else thinks.  I know its going to be a fun costume for the evening. Now I just need a Desi and Ethel.

You can like CD on Facebook and keep up to date on the latest costumes this year.

Summer is  half way over and with that means it is time to be thinking about the kiddos and back to school.  My toddler class loves Sesame Street and I have to say as a teacher I do too!
